Sunset Park SchoolIssue 1February 1, 2016
From the Principal's Desk
Dear Families
I am so excited to launch Sunset Park School Letter to Families. I’ll be writing to share important information at the beginning of every month.
In February, one of the many things we will be celebrating is the birthday of President Abraham Lincoln. As we talk with our children about his life and legacy, we have a great opportunity to teach our children about humility and generosity. He brought together a nation that was divided and he inspires us to work together to create the future we want.
I welcome parents to continue to contribute to making Sunset Park School great! If you’re interested in learning more about our school’s needs or resources, or if you have a question or concern, please come and talk with me. I have already enjoyed meeting with some of you. My doors are open for “office hours” on Tuesday afternoons from 1:40 - 2:25 PM, and Wednesday mornings from 8:20 - 9:05 AM. The Assistant Principals welcome you to come talk with them at these times as well.
Our next PTA meeting is on February 2nd at 8:30 AM in the auditorium. Among other agenda items, members of the Dual Language Committee will be presenting. I am excited to share that Sunset Park School may offer Spanish/English and Chinese/English dual language programs this September, beginning in Kindergarten. In dual language classrooms, teaching and learning take place in two languages and the goal is for students to learn to listen, speak, read and write in two languages. If you have an incoming Kindergartner and you are interested in learning about this program, we encourage you to attend the meeting. If you can’t attend the meeting, but would like to learn more about the program, please reach out to our dual language coordinator, Yesenia Caccamo. Her email is YCaccamo@schools.nyc.gov.
With spring on the horizon, our teachers have been busy planning field trips. Experiential learning is a great way for children to develop knowledge and vocabulary skills. I am excited to share that this year, the school will be paying the majority of all field trip fees. You can expect to be asked to contribute little or no money. Our goal is to cover all field trip fees in the future.
All the best,
Jaela Kim, Sunset Park School Principal
